Yes, open the Main Menu and go to the Settings tab. On the Main Settings panel, find the Passthrough Mode option and toggle it to On. This allows you to see your real-world surroundings while you color.

Can I hide the desk, easel and/or pen holders?

On the Main Settings panel you will be able to toggle the Desk Visibility option to Hide, toggle the Pen Holder Position option to Off, and toggle the Easel Position option to Off. This leaves you with just the canvas and your tools.

Can I create my own custom colors rather than just picking from a palette?

Yes, open the Main Menu and go to the Pens tab. On the Pen Selector panel, find the Custom tab. You'll see a color gradient rectangle to pick any color along with Red, Green, and Blue sliders for fine-tuning. View the Tutorial Video for a complete guide.

Why are there only 4 pen holders? It feels too limiting!

The default setup is designed to keep things simple for a casual experience. However, you can increase the number of pen holders to 16 by opening the Main Menu, going to the Settings tab. On the Other Settings panel find the Pen Holders option and toggle it to 16 holders. View the Tutorial Video for a complete guide.

Can I save my current pen holder setup to use later?

You'll see a Nib Size Adjust slider above the pen model on the Felt Tip pen or Chisel Marker section. A percentage higher than 100% will give a thicker/larger nib. A percentage lower than 100% will give a thinner/smaller nib. View the Tutorial Video for a complete guide.

The pencil and wax crayon feel too transparent. Can they be less transparent?

Yes, open the Main Menu and go to the Settings tab. On the Other Settings panel, find the Opacity Boosters sliders section. Adjust the Opacity Booster slider for the pen type you want to be more opaque. The higher the percentage, the less transparent the pen will be. View the Tutorial Video for a complete guide.

Can I color in my own artwork?

Yes, but this is a more advanced feature to get your artwork into the Artwork Selector.

If you want to try it then make sure your artwork is:

  • Solid black outlines on a transparent background.

  • 2048 x 2048 dimensions.

  • Saved as a transparent PNG.

The artwork must then be uploaded to a specific location on your device.

Upload the artwork to:

  • sdcard/Android/Data/com.SysdiaGames.OutsideTheLines/files/Custom/

When you visit the Artwork tab, there will a category called "Custom" and it will contain your uploaded artwork.

Note: You will need to create the "Custom" directory manually.

SideQuest is a good option for uploading files and creating directories on the device.

Exporting & Sharing
Can I export my completed artwork to download and/or share?

Yes, open the Main Menu and go to the Save/Load tab. On the Load panel, find the artwork you want to export and select it to open the Artwork Context Menu, then click the Export button. View the Tutorial Video for a complete guide.

Where do I find the exported images on the Meta Quest?

When you export an image, the UI shows you the path where it has been exported to, e.g. "Pictures/OutsideTheLinesVR/image_name_here". You can access these images by opening the Meta Quest Gallery app on your headset.

How do I get my artwork onto my phone with the Meta Quest?

Use Cloud Sync:

  1. Open the Files app on your Quest and make sure the Cloud Icon in the top right is enabled.
  2. Check your export is synchronized - it should say Synced under the image in the Files app.
  3. Once synchronized, open the Meta Horizon mobile app on your phone and go to Menu > Gallery to view or share it.
Can I sell the pages I export?

No. The export feature is provided so you can share your finished art with friends or print pages for your own personal use. Selling or redistributing these outlines (whether blank or colored) is a violation of the Meta Horizon Store Standard EULA and intellectual property rights. If you'd like to use the art for a commercial project, please email first to hello@outsidethelinesvr.com.

Development & Art Process
Is this game just using AI-generated artwork?

The coloring book pages are AI-assisted, which means they are not just a prompt typed into an engine. The design process starts with a hand-drawn sketch to work out the feel and layout of the page. That sketch is then fed into tools like MS Paint CoCreator to generate an image layout then into tools like Google's Nano Banana to produce clean, black-and-white line art. Finally, the image is loaded into a photo editing tool like Affinity Photo for manual clean-up to make sure it's a great coloring page. This is ultimately because I suck at art but have good intentioned ideas of what I want to achieve.

Why use AI instead of commissioning human artists?

As a solo developer, AI-assisted tools made it possible to launch with a library of 300+ unique pages while keeping the app affordable. Commissioning this many pages would have made the project financially unviable. If Outside The Lines VR is successful, the plan is to bring in commissioned human-drawn artwork in the future. In fact, discussions are already underway with a number excellent artists about bringing their unique style of work to Outside The Lines VR.

I have a great idea to improve the app! How do I let you know?

Community feedback is always welcome! First, check the Public Trello Board to see if your idea is already being considered. If not, send an email to hello@outsidethelinesvr.com or join the Discord server.
